Yaputhma Sound System - live video form Mad Mix (1996)

Image
A 20-minute fragment of the live show captured by Kristaps Krēsliņš  of Mācītājs on Acid . Mad Mix was a legendary underground music club in Riga, active in the 90s and very important for the scene at that time. YaSoSy played lots of times there, developing its sound and learning to fly together with the crowd who in turn was learning to trade traditional rock concert attitude for a true rave vibe. Thanks to Sergej Bainenkov for video processing.

Yaputhma Sound System - Live @ Bildes '96

Image
Boom. BIG BADA BOOM. A never-before published footage from LTV archives... Yaputhma Sound System playing live @ Bildes , annual festival in Riga, Latvia, December 1996. As seen on Latvian TV - first 10 minutes of 20-minute performance, featuring the band supported by dancing raver friends. Performed is a semi-improvised set not completely typical for YaSoSy: trading songs/vocalising, trademark delayed guitar sound and trading live rave'n'roll drumming for steady programmed beats it was the only time Yaputhma Sound System has ever used computer on stage. Partly it was a kind of a sneer towards the classic-rock-guitar nature of the festival, partly - a decision to try something different instead of popular hits expected from the band who was already sick of them at the time. Вот такое видео археологи раскопали в пыльных подвалах LTV: Yaputhma Sound System живьём на фестивале Bildes '96 . Я сам видел его один раз, мельком, 20 лет назад на экране ч/б телевизора. Понятно...

Snobo Hates Jazz

Image
Is this really jazz? Do I actually hate it? Are you warm enough? What is the meaning of life? Such good questions - and are you really gonna trade them for answers, boy? On the contrary to my last opus magnum, Waltz of the Fireflies , there is no large concept, long preparation and deeper meaning behind this collection of long-standing alt.jazz favorites. So take it easy and just, as they usually say in such cases, sit back, relax and enjoy. Snobo Hates Jazz by Gosh Snobo on Mixcloud Download: http://failiem.lv/u/txaludm

Waltz of The Fireflies

Image
After 2+ months of work my new mix, originally performed @ Space Textures  in September 2015 together with Lee Chapman , is published by Headphone Commute . Existentially, this mix is a meditation on mortality, a fear of death (own and dear ones) and simultaneously a latent desire to shortcut the earthly path (a theme I started to explore in my Music for a New Beginnings ). A kind of aural Maranasati, just prettier and less scary, or a reading from Seneca’s letters , but non-verbal and less moralizing. Kicking off with the sound of clay burial urns captured by Simon Whetham, it is centered around Sufjan Stevens’ lament to his late mother, which opens the gates of an “afterlife” that begins with a narrative from a Russian animation about seeing [signs and] wonders in mundanity and finding a waltz pattern in flashing street lights, followed by a limbo of Melanie De Biasio’s consolation to her own mother, and rounded off by a succession of heavenly piano music dissolving in the s...

Burulur EP: Gosh from Yaputhma & Various Artists

Image
After 7 years of sleeping in silence on a dusty hard drive, finally this baby - Burulur EP by Gosh from Yaputhma & Various Artists is released FTW as a free download. A fruit of collaboration with friends - Andrei Oid, Martinez Gonzalez aka gon7o, NGC-5128 and Suspect - who delivered stunning reworks for the original track I made way back in 2008.  Full disclosure: this was the last time I tried my hands on music software to see if I want to get back to making music after fatal HDD crash in 1999 and subsequent hiatus as a producer. I made this one and another track  Just Kitten , which was eventually released on San Francisco label De'fchild Productions (alas, R.I.P.) in the form of a remix album , with a bunch of reworks by Havantepe, Selffish, Martinez Gonzalez, The Marx Trukker and others. The test proved that I actually didn't want to get back to production, and instead I focused on DJing, making mixtapes, hosting a radioshow, writing about music and ot...

Colours of the Water

Image
This is a redux studio version of a mix I played @ Watercolours festival in Riga on 06.09.2014, which I have recorded and already previously, but Soundcloud banned it for copyright reasons, so it ended up on Mixcloud only. Still, I kept thinking of finding a way to make it available on Soundcloud where I have much wider audience, but a straightforward edit wasn't an option because taking the suppressed track out would ruin the dramaturgy of the mix; and actually, I was already considering reshaping the live take into a more refined studio version. So here it is: meticulously constructed, multi-layered assemblage that still takes cues from momentary impulses of a live performance. I think it's one of the cases when an obstacle forces you to improve and achieve even better results than you originally were aiming for.

Watercolours

Image
On 6 September 2014, under the auspices of the contemporary culture forum  White Night , the electronic music festival “Watercolours”, organized by my old friend, colleague and brother in arms Selffish , after 12-year break has again taken place at the floating arts centre NOASS on AB Dambis (AB Jetty) in Riga. The complete Rasols DJ crew has taken over the NOASS' 2nd floor, with audience residing on the jetty, enjoying the quality of the superb PA and the visuals projected on several screens; the highlight of the night has become the live graffiti writing performed by the godfather of Riga street art scene - Krys (Крыс). Being in the strictly minimal ambient/electroacoustic mood, I nevertheless had a momentary whim of starting the set with a penultimate flashback from LV rave-o-lution times - the epic ambient classic, Banco De Gaia's "Kinkajou (Duck! Asteroid)" remix, the track that kicked off the party of the parties, the one that opened the doors of percep...

Pianotheque: 88 shades of black and white

Image
Half a year after the  New Beginnings , I have a new mix. As the title says, it's all about the piano: my favorite solo piano pieces from recent years. There are days (and nights) when I can only listen to the sounds of 88 black and white keys, and sometimes I feel these sounds get so deep under my skin that I can repeat after Peter Broderick: "I am piano". Видеотека для Arterritory.com - выпуск №2

Image
Второй выпуск моей Видеотеки для блога Arterritory.com. Звёзды выпуска: Jenny Hval, Orla Wren, Kwala, King Krule, CocoRosie. http://ej.uz/videoteka2 I contribute for Arterritory.com , an art and culture blog in Latvian, Russian, and English, which focuses on Baltic, Scandinavian, and Russian art and its manifestations elsewhere in the world, where I write a monthly column titled "Videotheque". There I select the most interesting music of today that I can find in a visual format - preferably not just simple music videos, but live or studio performances, specially made films, in other words something really special both sonically and visually. The column is in Russian, but as an experiment I have translated issue #2 to English. This issue features Jenny Hval (pictured above), Orla Wren, Kwala, King Krule and CocoRosie.
