This is the recording of a set I played at the Rasols party @ Dirty Deal club, 07 Oct 2011. On the contrary to my well-known specialization in deep, contemplative, epic, beautiful, meditative, relaxed, spaced out stuff (=anthems), this time I decided to remember the old times and rock the party proper. So - bangers all the way, post-dubstep, UK funky, UK garage, call it whachalike - all shades of UK bass in a 135-bpm tempo!

After long work and preparations, finally, my track Just Kitten, with remixes from 8 artists, is out on De'fchild Productions, a very great San-Francisco-based label run by Ruoho Ruotsi. The remixes are provided by new and old friends: Selffish, Martinez Gonzalez, Ruoho Ruotsi himself, Havantepe, Triton, The Marx Trukker, Tim Suspect, Celice Monnette & Enrique Gongora...

Too bad a few more friends could not make the cut due to their busy schedule, but still the 62-minute collection does no longer qualify as an EP as it was originally planned... Remix album y'all! :)

The artwork is based on the painting from my dear Mom, done way back circa 1970 ~ more or less the same time as me ;)

Cozy, intimate but at the same time not sleepy, original design of everything, best attitude to DJs from hosts I've ever encountered, and just plain good aura. Dekalog : audio-video mix out on De'fchild Productions on DVD

Two years in the works, and finally materialized! I made a mix exclusively from first 10 records released by excellent San Francisco label De'fchild Productions, lead by Ruoho Ruotsi. Hence the title "Dekalog" (also a nod to a seminal film by Krzysztof Kieślowski). It is now out as a DVD, coupled with an outstanding & truly original video handmade by Sue-C (best known as Sue Costabile, worked with Kit Clayton and AGF amongst others).

I made a special presentation of the mix on our radio show Rasols on Radio Naba, playing the entire mix with my extensive comments in Russian over. This is the recording (streamable and downloadable).

Frozen Bass - live @ Localise: Baltic Session

The set I've played @ Localise: Baltic Session, the future bass night @ Media Station, Riga, 17 Dec 2010.

The main thing here is not the novelty of tracks, but the selection and juxtaposition of old and new stuff, and variety of moods.

Although I've been closely following dubstep scene since maybe 2006 or so, and often included separate tracks in my radio shows or cross-genre sets, I never cared to record full-on 140bpm mix. So this is the first one (maybe it would be the last one as well, who knows). Also, this year I seriously reduced the amounts of dubstep in my musical pedigree, therefore the mix includes quite a few old faves (I still think the first genius Pangaea record is his best, and generally the early Hessle Audio was better), some recent releases, a couple of unreleased tracks and - it wouldn't be me - some works that stray away from or are even remotely not related to the *step field.

If you turn up the volume and listen to the set on a powerful system, you would understand why it starts with the processed guitar track by Christopher Willits - the bass there is MASSIVE. When I dropped it, the room was filled with the sound as if it was liquid, people swayed in its waves as if it was the real surf :)

The Lathe of Heaven

The rules are made to be broken. A Rasoļņiks by definition is an impromptu collab mix, created by momentary impulse. But when Bombey and me recorded a minimal back2back ambient/drone/electroacoustic set on June 13, 2010, upon listening to it we concluded that it kinda sounds good, but... something was missing. Maybe it was the absence of Arno with his always surprising spoken word selections? An idea to do some kind of post-production followed: the original recording already contained some movie samples, so what if we add more extracts from our favourite films, making a "thematic" Rasolnik?

And that's when we turned to our like-minded friend, DJ Gonzo, asking him to add spoken words, field recordings and anything appropriate to complete the atmosphere. He did a fantastic job of seriously enhancing the set with extracts from thematic and obscure movies. An exchange of files followed, triggering back my response - me adding more samples from my own favourite movies... As the result, what we get is a hybrid: live spontaneous mix with additional layers of meticulously selected speech and field recordings, all creating the surreal effect of a soundtrack to a (imaginary?) trippy movie or a strange, psychedelic dream. The dreams, be careful of them: sometimes they can alter reality...

An eclectic, complex, multi-layered mix hopping from genre to genre and tempo to tempo, while retaining an abstractly psychedelic and solemn mood. An opus magnum of sorts. Mixed live with Traktor virtually in one take with minimal post-production on FX/EQ, so took me a while to rehearse, in order to get all layers and transitions done the way I wanted (26 tracks in 1 hour) - so this is not a careful and punctual Ableton/Mixmeister construction...

My sincere recommendation to those who care to check this one out - I humbly suggest listening to it in one take, and preferably not as a background music, but rather while paying attention. It was conceived and played with an idea of dramatic development in mind, really as a kind of a trip... Plus all these details and layers... It's neither a dance mix nor a chill-out relaxation session, rather an integral piece that - hopefully - tells a story and is "more than sum of its parts", if you know what I'm sayin'...

Shout outs go to DJ Gonzo for the inspiration on doing this one. And to Macka for forging the most creative and out-of-this-world dubstep variations I ever heard (not speaking of his works in other genres), that blew my mind so bad that I included 3 tracks from his free Images EP, which kinda creates one of the axes of the mix.

We used to have a fantastic tea-room, Goija, in Riga, Latvia. Cozy, intimate, with inner garden and vast selection of teas. Throwing miniparties and film screenings from time to time. All in all a perfect place to meet and just to sit and relax. Now it's closed for good. Due to closure, a Last Party has been held, I was among the DJs and played this 1-hour ambient/electroacoustic set.

It intersects just a little bit with another mix of mine, A Rest From Intention, hope it's not a big problem (so you won't Stop Me If You Think You Heard This One Before). It also starts a bit misleading, with deconstructed 4x4 beats, because I was continuing from another DJ who played very good dub techno :) - don't let the beginning fool ya ;)

Totally horizontal selection of achingly beautiful recent electroacoustic works, with some old but evergreen ambient post-rock favorites thrown in for a good measure. Otherworldly in general, epic in places, and sometimes intimately lovely. Mixed on a late chilly night of April 19, 2010 under influence of volcanic ashes flying a few miles above the ground.

As usual in such cases, no driving or operating machinery is advised; horizontal position, low lights and Shoyeido (preferably Kin-Kaku) are recommended ;)

WolfoLambo: Snobo plays W+L

This is the mix consisting solely of the tracks from NYC label Wolf+Lamb. Why? Because it's a fantastic label. I've become an instant fan after discovering it in 2009 and couldn't get tired of listening to and spinning track after track since. The best house music I heard in ages... Maybe even since the 90s. The sound palette is quite varied, from functional dancefloor business to sonic experiments and jazz-influenced weirdness, but the main sound is what I call "minimal lounge" - jazzy, relaxed but still groovy, tasty house with no cheese and no excess fat too. Oh yeah, and totally rocking disco/funk/pop edits for a good measure :)

Rasols: radio show @ Radio Naba

XXI century got a new decade, and we - the DJ wing of the organization Daba - got a new radio show on the local Radio Naba, 93.1 FM (retranslated over the net via www.naba.lv). The show is called "Rasols" (which is the name of the popular Latvian salad, thus reflecting the mixture of styles, moods and tastes of us radio hosts - Arno, Bombey, Contour (as a DJ duo, known as Home Radio), Marimana and myself). The show is weekly, every Sunday 17:00 Riga time. All shows are archived at our home base http://daba.info/rasols/ for download or streaming.

However, while my space limit allows, at least for some time I will also host mixes/podcasts/selection I make for the show @ my soundcloud. They will differ from the ones hosted via daba.info in that on my SC there will be original mixes without voice overdubs (in Russian) I do live in the studio (for the time being, I prefer to prepare the show @ home, and only speak over the recorded podcast during the air).

I'm very happy to have my monthly (as we are many people, so normally each one of us gets one show a month; but we will prolly also cross-pollinate and do minimixes and show collabs in various combinations too) show and generally be part of Daba. Also, in these podcasts I feel myself quite free to choose any music I love with almost no restrictions, so it means possibility of stepping out of the dancefloor bizniz and beat-matching routine (not that I will never do it! We have plans to do a co-show with Bombey solely dedicated to a guy named Ricardo Villalobos, so expect two tight half an hour megamixes from each of us).

Rasolnik (Рассольник)

In addition to radio shows, we do experimental, cross-genre impromptu back2back mixes, playing mostly non-dancefloor stuff, trying to add as much acapellas, spoken word and FX as possible (especially if Arno is participating). These are called "Rasolnik's" (which is the name of a traditional Russian soup, known by the huge number of ingredients and actually freedom to put anything in there). Things I was excited about in 2009 pt.8

The XX

The XX, a very young London band, consisting of three 20-year olds (the fourth member dropped out due to exhaustion during their dangerously massive world tour), topped virtually all charts of 2009. And I think it’s one of those cases when the hype is totally justified. Interesting is the contrast between the hype and the music itself – it’s not your typical chart-topper flashy hyperactivity blitz; instead what you get is softly flangered guitars, hushed murmurs of vocalists Oliver Sim and Romy Madley Croft (who both remind me, a little bit - visually and audibly - of Tricky circa “Maxinquaye” and Tracey Thorn of Everything But The Girl), minimalistic drum machines and synths reserved enough to leave a lot of precious space between the notes and give a stylish pulsation but never rock the party hard. On top of that you get a real musical taste, great melodies and charisma. Plus a bunch of unexpecting covers and remixes (fantastic remix of You’ve Got The Love by another British media darlings – Florence and The Machine; and a cool (in any sense of the word) cover of UK Funky biggest hit - Kyla’s “Do Your Mind”). These two are one of the best remixes/covers I heard this year.

God Help The Girl

God Help The Girl is a concept project started by Belle and Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch. It’s a soundtrack for a film… which is yet to be shot (if all goes well, in 2010). It’s the story which eventually got shape from songs Stuart have been writing for 5 years and which didn’t seem to fit in the Belle and Sebastian material. To record these songs, Stuart wanted to find new female singers, not necessarily popular, so advertisements have been placed in the media, stating “girl vocalist wanted. Celine Dion wannabes, save your breath” and asking to add contender’s vocals to two Belle and Sebastian classic songs. Out of several hundreds, 3 girls have been selected, one of them – a newcomer Catherine Ireton – possessing a breathtakingly beautiful voice, comparable to sweet sunny voices of the best ‘50s-‘70s divas (Anna German comes to my mind first).

The whole album is a brilliant collection of classic pop songs with evergreen melodies (you can easily imagine them written decades ago and standing the test of times since) with super-professional arrangements, and the combination of these ingredients with heavenly voices make an ultimate listening pleasure if you can enjoy this cup of English tea.

Nothing is known about the mysterious Swedish project who released a 26-minute album on Sincerely Yours label, which only adds charm to already engaging aura of catchy semi lo-fi pop songs sung by not always 100% precise teenage girl voice (heck, the voice seems so young that I can actually imagine it could have been a 14-year boy singing, which makes it all even more ambiguous) over unashamedly MIDI-sounding strings and programmed synthpop beats. Positive, naive, dreamy, summery and – the secret of the attractiveness of the record – semi-amateurish in the best appealing sense of the word. And of course, the melodies – some of the songs, like the starters “Things Will Never Be The Same Again” and „From Africa to Malaga” you just can’t get out of your head after repeated listening; and thanx to the shortness of the album, it just asks to be played over and over, as soon as the funny acoustic closer „Me and Dean”, where the singer fails trying to hit the high note and we hear them laughing, fades out. This is how early Smiths, fronted by Mirah, could sound if remixed by Erlend Oye and Morgan Geist.

Fink „Sort of Revolution”

Multinstrumentalist and DJ Fink (Fin Greenall) started releasing albums and mixtapes on Ninja Tune and its sublabel Ntone in the late 90s – classic Ninjatunish blend of trip-hop/downtempo/funky breaks, until things started to change in mid 00s, when Fink grabbed an acoustic guitar and started to sing in a deep husky baritone, backed by stripped down combo of jazzy drums and bass. And what a welcome revolutionary change it was! “Distance and Time” made my jaw hit the floor back in 2007 – minimalistic arrangements, almost physically palpable beauty of the sound recording - hissing of brushed drums, subtlety of plucked strings, ultra deep, almost dubby (although presumably acoustic!) bass, and on top of that –incredible, penetrating sadness and masculinity of Fink’s voice, elegant austerity of lyrics.

This year, Fink released a new album, “Sort of Revolution”, which continued and developed the same aesthetic – arguably, even improving it (hard to judge as “Distance and Time” seemed perfect already). The title song, which might be the best song Fink ever produced, has all the features described above – plus, as a killing bonus, added dub FX in the final part. Please, sit down and hear it through.

I can hardly name any more beautifully recorded music in my collection. I feel totally mesmerized each time I hear these songs.

P.S. Fink’s alter-ego is Sideshow – a mostly instrumental dub (previously – downtempo and house) project (not surprisingly echoes of dub found its way into Fink’s main sound). A very deep album “Admit One” is out on Will Saul’s Aus Music, check it too.

Cortney Tidwell

Since I first heard debut EP by this Nashville girl a couple years ago, I couldn’t stop spinning it. I rate it as one of my favourite releases of the 00s. Why? A combination of songwriting talent, brave pairing of electronic elements with traditional instrumentation & arrangements (also making friends with right people from the dance world which results in a series of good and sometimes unexpecting remixes), desperation and tenderness, lullabies and rockers, drums and drum machines, samplers and slide guitars, folk and shoegaze, ballads and glitches, and, in fact, first of all… how could I describe it… deep intelligent sensuality. This wailing voice… it’s just killing me softly :)

Actually, my love to Cortney Tidwell is one of those rare cases when words ultimately fail to explain the reasons and describe her greatness, just as music critics desperately try to make up an apt description of her sound (how would you like, urgh, “goth country”? I immediately remember the “gothic blues” in regards to Nick Cave, which actually makes sense). And while I still rate that first EP as her greatest height, “Boys” is an excellent album that can appeal both to very traditional rock music lovers and to people from dance/experimental background, and I lost count of playing it this year.

Best of 2009: Shackleton “Three EPs”

After closing up his and Appleblim’s label Skull Disco with “Soundboy’s Gravestone Gets Desecrated By Vandals”, Shackleton was a bit quiet in 2009, a few remixes and reissues, but no substantial new material. And then in autumn, after a preview session on Mary Anne Hobbs’ “Breezeblock”, a bomb dropped on Perlon. And oh my, what a nuclear bomb that was…

The words “genius” and “unique” are lame in their subjectivity. How can I explain the greatness of these tracks then? Well… I’ll try to outline “uniqueness”, leaving the “genius” up you.

Shackleton, who always sounded unlike anyone else, now doesn’t exactly sound even like himself… I mean, the percussive intricacy and ghostly atmospheres are here, but with a few exceptions there are no replications of the sounds heavily featured on Skull Disco releases. Tracks like “(No More) Negative Thoughts” and “Let Go” are not scary; rather you could call them… quirky. Voice samples, organ sounds, basslines dance weird but almost funny dances around you. These are the sounds of ghosts partying and having fun, rather than pushing you too deep into abandoned graveyards and misty marches. The gospel chant “He’s got a whole world is his hands” in “Asha In The Tabernacle” is actually an uplifting tune, but how wicked it sounds in the context, no matter how cheekily Shackleton plays around with it on a sample keyboard, old-skool style…

Unsurprisingly, this is absolutely NOT dubstep even as most tracks clock around 140 bpm (but there are also 120, 135). After all, BPMs don’t mean a thing here, because this music is so free-flowing and unrestricted by mixing/partying concerns that you hardly recognize the tempo unless you really concentrate… So are the riddims: uncategorizable, uncomparable to tried and tested patters (what surprises the most, that mostly they ARE groovy - in a twisted way, but still).

So are the structures – there are no standard 8-bar intros/bass drops; neither the tracks are steady-rolling from start to finish. They evolve, freely an unpredictably – without becoming too progressive/IDM complex at the same time. An intro of “Asha In The Tabernacle” lasts for 3 minutes, after which the bass drops… “Trembling Leaf” is all just percussion sounds, textures and fragmented voices. The kick and bass drop half-way in for around 2 minutes.

I can’t imagine all but very inventive DJs mixing these tracks, although it is actually possible – the tempos are friendly (unlike the structures and the moods though). Which is a pity – no matter how good it sounds on your home stereo, when played on a decent club sound system these tracks can transport you to faraway places… And if played on a summer night at a proper open-air in a proper location (some Arizonian desert… ok, at least @ Tundra) – oh oh, you better hold tight to your mind, boy :)

As a bonus, in the late autumn the man dropped even less-Shackleton sounding remix, on a fantastic 12” Harmonia & Eno ’76 Remixes. The track excels in that it sounds less weird/ghostly/out-there, at the same time still sticking away from standard patterns. On the flip, Appleblim & Komonazmuk astonish with an incredibly yummy 180bpm surprise, which could kick off any Loxy or DJ Dann set with a mood to remember after the party’s over.

Best of 2009: Wixel and his “a year in albums” diary-project

This summer, browsing thru a well-known torrent tracker, I accidentally stumbled upon a curiosity – an album of Sonic Youth covers by unknown to me project called Wixel. I downloaded and… was shocked by the freshness, originality of the music, and easiness with which it seemed to emit the hands and the minds of the player(s). After quick googling I found out that Wixel is the one-man project (with support by long-time collaborators when performing live) by a Belgian guy Wim Maesschalck, who released several albums, plays/ed in a few bands, runs a label Slaapwel Records (which translates as Sleep Well Records) and a blog or even a few. Further reading is revealed that the guy is very intelligent, full of ideas, energy, very generous on words (reading his elaborate and inventive musings written in a good language is serious, er, fun) and as it turned out – also on the music.

Because his latest Awesome Stupid Project (one of many! Check musical soup or alphabetical listening for example) is a kind of diary/self-imposed vow – to release 12 albums in the year 2009. He set himself a few rules in hope that self-restrictions only reinforce creativity. Albums, not EPs or singles, and not just MP3s, but physical albums with real packaging (albeit handmade), with mail-order and stuff. But at the same time each album can be freely downloaded in 320 kbps! Pay only if you really want to. I rushed to download... I must confess that I also downloaded virtually everything else created by Wim, and, what can I say... I was astonished again – almost everything was really, really good – original and fresh music with soul, ideas, warm sound, and with feet in very diverse waters – post-rock, acoustic or electronic ambient/sound-design, loopery, field recordings, lo-fi quiet and loud pop songs, and even a few gentle intelligent dubstep/downtempo beats...

The process of creation of each album was described on Wim’s multiple online presence places, inconstant as his music – myspace, blogs, the personal website that’s now down, bandcamp/twitter/tumbler etc... He sincerely confessed that as the year and the project moves on he became quite tired of it, almost out of ideas, close to ditching the project, but still found the energy to continue (and the November record seems to find him having a second breath). I think this makes the whole story even more interesting – going thru hard times and surviving. I bow down low to the dedication, the energy, the artistical taste and musical craftsmanship of Wim Maesschalck, and wish him all the best and good luck in ~~completing this and~~ starting more Awesome Stupid Projects next year :)

So, I cordially recommend y'all to check any or all of the monthly albums from the 2009.bandcamp.com – I especially like An Empty Canvas, Slaapliedjes [which translates as Lullabies], Clouds (actuallty the whole 1st half of the year is immense), Somewhere between The Sun & The Moon pt 2, but principially they’re all good.

Best of 2009: Wolf + Lamb

Things I was excited about in 2009 pt.5
If I have to name one record label that rocked my world in 2009, it was Wolf + Lamb. Since I discovered this Brooklyn-based label after an educating feature on Nicolas Jaar in Resident Advisor by Philip Sherburne, I couldn’t stop checking, listening and dancefloor-testing any releases I could find. What makes this labels so special? The label owners, Gadi Mizrahi and Zev, once said that “the only constant thing about W+L is permanent change”, which is close to truth – ok, within more or less party-oriented music, that is. In short, equalizing and summarizing the moods that range from functional minimal of Lee Curtis thru classic disco/funk edits of Soul Clap thru minimal disco of Michael J Collins to currently most-prevalent sound of deep, jazzy, loose house (but never cheesy, never band-wagon jumping), and ending with “fuck-dance-let’s-art” jazzy experiments of Nicolas Jaar, I would call the music “minimal lounge”.

With some exceptions, this is not the music to ignite the floor at 4 am. A lot of the output is targeted at loungey events or beginning of the night. However, you can find also proper tools for mid-energy sets, both in ranges around 115 and 125 bpm. What makes these tracks stand out from the shoreless sea of contemporary dance music, is a very careful blend of minimalism and deepness, sparse use of jazzy moods/samples and dub FX, and a lot of surprises. Inventiveness over straightforward functionalism, in other words; but still without putting the head inside the artist’s arsehole and forgetting about people on the floor. I think it’s totally possible to play the whole DJ set solely out of the tracks released on Wolf+Lamb and make it very diverse and entertaining – a couple of listening-only tunes, some slow-mo e-funk (both relaxed and hot), some deep’n’jazzy house, some minimal and/or dubby, some almost techno, a few peak tunes… And it will work both for home and in club (though not necessarily in Space:Garage, and certainly not at 4:00 pm) ;)

Most of the early output on W+L was digital only; lately, they started to accompany some of the releases with vinyl (although yummy digital-only tracks might still keep Traktorists holding their primary attention on the label). On the W+L website, http://wolflambmusic.com/ most of the catalogue can be heard and bought; also, there is a vast archive of downloadable or streamable podcasts and live mixes, perfect for soundtracking your home pre-(or after-)party.

Things I was excited about in 2009 pt.4

Andrei0id – Vakars pie Ezera aka Minipower podcast 037
This is one of the best mixes I heard, ever. Why? Because of extremely deep and very natural integration of tunes, most of which I heard before but in the context of mix they got a new life, sometimes I almost felt as if I was listening to them for the first time; and even more importantly - because of the pace of the mix. It’s not a party mix, surely more for attentive listening at home or on a car-ride, and the way it takes me out there of this world is absolutely psychedelic.

Sven Weisemann – Groove magazine #119 mix
Very tasty house music, varied, groovy though not peak-time, no cheese. Again, the ultimate reason for being my 2009 fave is the pace/development (modern classical intro (Max Richter), then slow-mo deep house from Sven himself, then unfolding and getting groovier, more minimal, dubbier, and all of sudden – you can hardly even noitice – we’re in 140bpm territory, and ending with Max Richter again) and the mixing style – two turntables and a CD mixer, totally natural flow but deep integrity and precision of an Ableton mix.

CX1 podcast by Loxy
At the moment of writing, there are 6 other CX podcasts by Loxy in similar mnml dnb vein, and two others, less mnml/more traditional ones by guest mixers… But the one that rolled the ball still remains my favourite (well, CX3 is equally good). I guess I listened to this one at least 20 times since it was published… Deep as Mariana Trench, delicate as a Japanese massage, beautiful as a Wong Kar Wai movie, (subtly) rolling as a… mmm… the contents of your Rizla. Incredible stuff.

FACT 70 mix by The XX
The XX is widely hyped as the best new indie band, and rightfully so – I totally agree and am a fan too. But if you checked their debut album and were a little bit underwhelmed by a bit too samey sound of gently flangered unfuzzed guitars and melancholic/husky murmur of vocalists (this is how КИНО should have sounded in 2009, hehe), check this mix, which in its 30 minutes features excerpts from “private” stripped-down bassy edits of some of the XX tracks from the album; a few dubstep tunes; a few alt-folk/hip-hop mutations; a drum solo; and a few pure pop/rnb/disco songs of various cheese levels, which all of a sudden resolve in another bassy edit. The pace here, again, is jaw-dropping: switching from mood to mood is absolutely effortless. While there is a lot of “normal” mixing, you will hear some of the best showcases of the non-beatmatched mixing “by mood/sound” – the way CocoRosie’s “Rafael” (an ultimately beautiful song, btw) segues into that extended drum solo, which in turn kickstarts a disco track, is nothing short of genius: it just sounds as if it was all meant to be that way.

Unsound 2009 mix by Philip Sherburne
Painstakingly compiled (in Ableton, I guess) as a showcase for artists to perform at Unsound festival (Poland, October 2009), this a genius masterpiece of a polystylistic mix. To be given a pre-selected playlist consisting of modern classical, ambient, experimental, drone (and drone-metal), techno, deep house, dubstep and singer-songwriter stuff, and blending them in a coherent whole is a very serious task. And it takes an experience, broad and ultimate taste of a seasoned music writer and DJ Philip Sherburne (I remember reading his columns way back in the 1990s yet) to get away with it, done perfectly.

FACT 50 mix by Braiden + FACT 29 mix by Brackles
The best showcase of a “funkstep” crossover disregarding if the name would stick or no – mixing dubstep of various blends, house, UK Funky, breaks, switching from straight to broken beat, from uplifting, sometimes tongue-in-cheek party tunes to serious bass bashment, never staying at one mood for more than 2-3 tracks… I only wish to hear things like these in Space: Garage (and I believe the party would be rocked hard!)

Best of 2009: Funkstep and other unnamed dubstep mutations

Some people like to play with genre names, others make fun of these attempts and seriously allege that the former kill music by doing so, and there are only two types of music – good and bad (forgetting that there are as many good and band musics, as there are people, multiplied on their changing moods and ages). Whatever, let’s not go deep in the etymology and genealogy wars, let’s just have a look at a certain area of music that some people called Funkstep, no matter how long this name will survive.

A couple years ago dubstep, which was mostly known to people outside the game as gloomy, teutonic half-stepping hardly-danceable monster with wobbling basses (which was partially – but only partly! - true), started both dividing, cross-pollinating and reaching out to wider audiences, impregnating other musics and intervening countries and scenes. Some branches, crossing over with techno, become very uplifting and sometimes turning straight-beat (2562, Sigha). At the same time tempo remained strictly 140 bpm. Then came UK Funky – essentially a house music around 125-128 bpm with strong UK Garage and Afrobeat influence, made by former grime producers, disenchanted in masculinity and aggression of their audience. While not exactly radical invention, UKF reminded everyone that apart from futurism and any forms of musical inventiveness dance music should be fun.

As the result, some dubstep producers started slowing down their BPMs, some funky people – raising theirs. Many also began widening their sound palette and invent less predictable drum patterns. As the result, the sign o’ the times is the tendency of closing the dance music continuum between straight–beat realm of under 130 bpm and dubstep-broken beat area around 140 bpm; and the appearance of tracks that in the simplest case sound like slower straightened dubstep, or – the yummiest part of the cake - an exciting mixture of electro, Nintendo/gameboy music, grime, electrofunk, Miami bass, house and anything else.

Things I was excited about in 2009 pt.2
This one is related to “Best of 2009: The rise of mnml db”, but I decided that it deserves a separate mention. So… at a certain moment of time a very simple-looking website www.club‑autonomic.com that has exactly one simple page with links to monthly podcasts with no tracklists and no credits has attracted hundreds of thousands of downloads and crashed, so the de-jure anonymous people behind it had to change the internet provider.

Why the hype? Because each podcast, roughly about 1-2 hours long, consisted of delicious, fresh-out-of-oven, mostly unreleased mnml dnb yummies in a mixed section, wrapped in the “Influences” enclosure, that featured ANYTHING that was considered influential by the people behind Autonomic crew – dBridge and Instra:mental guys (Al Bleek and Kid Drama). Both sections were just mind-blowingly tasty, but I think it’s exactly due to the enclosure these podcasts have become THAT popular. Mostly consisting of absolutely non-dnb-related electronica of 90s and 00s, it also included US rap old and new, electro, funk, pop songs, everything - you could hear Autechre, Drexciya, Alan Parson’s Project, Tangerine Dream, The Stone Roses, Prince, even Whitesnake (!) and Foreigner (!). Exactly this effortless genre hopping, sometimes with mixing, sometimes without, equally effortlessly segued into the mnml dnb section, and overall futuristic mood (somehow the retro-futurism of 80s electrofunk shook hands with the latest productions) made the series virtually a cult in certain circles.

My favorite is the podcast #7 (which I heard the first in series, so maybe it’s like a first love, hard to judge now) – but absolutely each of them deserves a download and a listen.

Best of 2009: The rise of mnml dnb scene

Things I was excited about in 2009 pt.1

More or less 10 years passed since I lost any interest in drum’n’bass scene after it lost any funk and becoming all boring drum loops + wobbling/howling basses attractive only for die-hard scenesters. I did checked the scene a couple of times, always getting added evidence that nothing really beats the golden era of jungle and artcore; even the best attempts sounded well-executed, sonically and rhythmically complex, but… just not fresh, stagnant.

So I was totally excited this year, when thanx to an excellent local DJ Dann I got introduced to the radically new sound of 180 bpm-based music, which AFAIK hasn’t got a new keenly designed genre name, so can be referred to as “minimal d’n’b”. This stuff, simply put, ditches everything I hate in traditional drum’n’bass: distorted basses, emphasized mid-range frequencies, pummeling or at least metronomic drums, sticking to tried formula, and hardcore “smashing you with the sound” ethos - all of which reminds me of heavy metal (although equally yawning are silky jazz licks and gentle rolling beats a-la Good Looking Records). Instead, mnml dnb is subtle, intricate, microscopic beats, inventive non-schematic programming, and a lot of space between notes and drum hits. Technically speaking, loud punching regular snares are rarely used, replaced by syncopated rimshots, fingersnaps and other fine percussive sounds. Not a party music, actually. But still with deep bass, and still in the region of 170-180 bpm. In many cases it resembles abstract hi-tech dubstep, only sped up (not surprisingly Breakage, relatively young but very talented producer is well-known on both scenes).

The flag bearers of the new sound are, surprisingly, the veterans of the scene (which in due time rocked the party hard and loud) – firstly dBridge and Instra:mental as producers and DJs, and Loxy who is the first DJ you gotta check if you’re interested (and I really, really advise you to do so! my favourite is still his first CX1 podcast, but there are already 8 others…). Another prominent faces include ASC, Consequence (fantastic debut album “Live for Never” on Exit), Spectrasoul, Dan Habarnam, June Miller, Bop and Despot from Russia, and many many others. Interesting, that to a big extent this scene populates via internet: a lot (if not the majority) of tracks played by DJs are unreleased, published on SoundCloud and sent by artists to DJs directly, without or before signing to labels. Speaking of the latter, the leaders are Exit, NonPlus+, Cylon, which are not afraid to release stuff that mutates so far that it can hardly be called “dnb” at all (here it resembles and partly joins the pathways of forward-looking dubstep).

This is a recreation of the set I played @ Space:Garage on Disco Not Disco party. Recreation, because... I forgot to press that red record button, ya know... ;) And I really, really liked the vibe, so I just mixed exactly the same records in exactly the same order a couple of days later, hot on the heels of love, so to say. I also wanted to replicate that loose club feeling, playing around with tracks or rather letting them play with me... So it's the most precise reconstruction of a lost live recording possible.

Well, honestly, almost... except for the last 2 tracks, to be 100% precise. Mike Monday's unofficial remix of Animal Collective's "My Girls" is a good tool and a proper peak banger, but... fairly enough, the original is unbeatable, and I actually wanted to play the latter that night, but for some reason haven't done it, so now - revenge (two in one)! And after all, it's nice to close the 2009 with totally the best song released this year :)

Snapshots at an Exhibition (mix for Tik Tak Radio)

An epic journey! Unlike my previous mixes - Introvertech and Slowtech, this one is not that moody, in parts even quite uplifting... But still don't expect a steady dancefloor action anyway - it's not one-flavour mix for sure. As always, it's a mixture of brand-new and old tunes. Some of them are my favorites of the year - Goldmann's grandiose remix of "Arcade", Solomun's remix of "Una Peña", "Leave It All Behind" (one of the many fruits from the garden of Autonomic delights), a fragment of Bruno Pronsato's opus magnum, and Villalobos' majestic "rework of the rework" (although nominally released in December 2008, exactly a year ago, but let's consider it a tune of the 2009). So, if you wish, take it as a short summary of the year...

The title "Snapshots at an Exhibition" partly refers to a XXI-century techno-logical update of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition", a suite he wrote in 1874 in memory of the painter Victor Gartman and his art, and which is now trance-mitted to a modern generation via "Uli, Mein Ponyhof RMX". At the other hand, this can be an apt description of the mix itself: while Mussorgsky, Craig, Von Oswald and Villalobos are Creators with a capital C, I see myself just as an art lover, a connosieur (a fine word, but essentially - a consumer), who walks along the arcade of an exhibition hall and while the guards are not watching, takes amateurish snapshots - not professional photographs, not even with a DSLR... I'm not creating anything. The best I can do is just selecting the most interesting and deserving exhibitions to go to, and picking my faves. And sometimes supporting the artists by paying the entrance fee.

So, I recorded a new mix, which is supposed to reflect the direction I'm currently going to pursue (in straight-beat oriented realm of electronic music, that is). Which means... the vibes totally opposite to a hot 3am dancefloor action ;) I call it "introvertech"... This is the rhythm & sound I really like and feel for, Raudive and Margaret Dygas totally blew my mind, and Peter Kruder delivered the track of the Summer - "Chordal", so as soon as I feel pretty ecstatic prolly expect more mixes in this vein. live @ Videography III : Space Textures mix

I've recorded my live DJ mix @ Videography : Space Textures III in Riga, Latvia, a multimedia event as part of annual White Night festival, 12.09.2009. It's a conceptual and epic blend of organic microsound design mixed with modern classical, a.k.a. neochamber, pieces. So not a single drum beat in sight (er... or in... hearing?).

I really like it myself, I hoped it would be nice but was surprised how actually good it sounds to my ears... However, please beware: no driving/operating machinery while listening to this one! Tripping out is very possible (not to say it is intended). Horizontal position, eyes closed and peace of mind are highly recommended.

The whole event took place in Riga Circus, with 3 videoscreens hanging from the ceiling, musicians performing from the entrance to the arena, VJs from the orchestra balcony, and the
audience both sitting in circles and walking/dancing across the arena. Add an aroma of mighty animals. Quite an extravaganza ;)
